Why my toolbox keeps getting smaller

I used to find a separate tool for every small need. Reading had its own app, bookmarks went somewhere else, and passing ideas landed in several different notebooks.

Eventually, the slow part was deciding where to put something.

Give each tool a boundary

I began describing each tool in one sentence. A text editor is for writing. A calendar holds commitments at a particular time. A folder keeps material I want to own for the long term.

A new tool joins the routine when it solves a problem that the existing ones do not handle well.

Choose content that can leave

I prefer plain text and files that can be opened independently. Changing an application should not require reconstructing everything I have written.

This is one reason to write a blog in Markdown: the articles can belong to the writer, even when the editor changes.

Leave some things manual

Not every repeated action needs automation. Some kinds of organising are useful opportunities to understand the material again. With a smaller toolbox, it becomes easier to see what the day is actually spent doing.
